Two Ida's Resolved

In this journal, we started with confusion over "Ida". For now, we have answered the main question. We have concluded that there were two Ida's.

It turns out that Ida (Cosmer) Drew was not a Cosma/Jacinto da Camara at all. She was a Pavon (Pavao) who was given away to a relative for adoption.

As for Ida (Camara) Pacheco, we learned that she was Ida Jacinto. While she is a Jacinto, we cannot conclude whether this family and the Jacinto da Camara/Cosma clan are related. The family can easily be found in Census records, but nothing points to the fact that they are connected beyond this marriage.

Some day in the future it might be possible to take them back to Sao Miguel Island and see if something comes up. It does appear that Jacinto and Jacinto da Camara were fairly common surnames, so it's possible that these families are not related at all. Thus we conclude at least part of this mystery!

Next journal begins May 1st and tries to resolve who adopted Helen Correia.

Who was Jose Pacheco's Wife?

[Research Journal #3, Entry #5]

In the last entry, we resolved Ida Cosmer Drew's identity. But, who was Jose's wife? How could she be a Camara and not a Cosma? How many families were there roaming around Kauai with the same last name?

It was time to get some documentation on Ida #2. The first step was to find her in the 1920 Census. It was a bit of a surpise to find Jose and Ida living in Kilauea and not Oakland! There they were with their three children in Camp 1E on Kilauea Road of Kilauea Village. Ida was 23 years old, born in Hawaii. Still nothing specific was found about her identity or ancestry.

Since we didn't know when or where Ida was born or who her parent's were, the best route would be to find her marriage certificate. Plenty was known about her husband, Jose A. Pacheco, his information should lead to their marriage certificate.

The certificate was found on a microfilm at the Family History Center of the LDS church. The couple was married in Koloa not Kilauea. Although Jose's family was residing in Kilauea, he was residing in Eleele as was Ida. Both were born in Hawaii. Ida's information added more confusion to the fire. She was not listed as Ida Camara but Ida Jacintha. And, her parents were August Jacintha and Mary Jacintha, Portuguese natives.

August and Mary had not come up in the other Jacinto/Jacinto da Camara/Cosma/Camara/Cambra/Camera research. Was August related to the other families? Was the "Camara" information on Ida a mistake? Could there have been other Jacinto da Camara's wandering around Kauai who were not related to this other family? If we really wanted to know who Ida was, we would have to research her folks as well.

Getting Ida Cosmer Drew in Order

[Research Journal #3, Entry #4]

Sometimes in genealogy, you have to prove what isn't true before you can find out what is true. In order to figure out who Ida Camara was, it was important to figure out who she was not. Her identity had to be separated from Ida Cosmer Drew.

It was time to find people connected to either Ida's to sort out the mess. Ida Cosmer Drew's children were found through their Camara cousins. They were more than willing to clear up any misconceptions and add a little spice to the pot as well! They knew alot about their Mother, Ida--things that hadn't been revealed before. Ida (Cosmer) Drew wasn't really a Cosma/Cosmer/Jacinto da Camara (Phew! Say that 10 times fast!). She was a Pavon! Her real parents were Manoel Rocha Pavao, Jr. and Alexandrinha "Shandra" Jacinto! Since nothing is simple with this family...here's the scoop on Ida Cosmer Drew

Manoel and Minnie Jacinto da Camara (aka Manuel & Minnie Cosmer) had no children. Due to an illness, Manoel and Alexandrinha asked that Manoel and Minnie take care of their baby, Ida, for awhile. When they were ready to take Ida home, Manoel and Minnie were grieved. She was the child they could not have. In the end, Manoel and Alexandrinha agreed to give Ida to them. Ida was raised by the Cosmer's along side her Pavao (Pavon) siblings. She ended up with two families.

Ida had two sets of parents, but only one husband, John Drew. This clearly meant that we had two different Ida's. Now, the question is...
Who was Jose's wife? And, what family did she belong to?
